Peterson’s Field Guide to Rocks and Minerals
by Frederick H. Pough
5th Ed, Paperback 395 pages
Dimensions (inches): 7.2 x 4.5 x 1.2
Published by Houghton Mifflin Co. on January, 1998
Publisher’s Synopsis: This definitive guide to rocks and minerals has been completely updated for this fifth edition. Includes detailed descriptions of 276 minerals: geographic distribution, physical properties, chemical composition, and crystalline structures. Contains 385 new color photographs showing rocks, minerals, and geological formations. Describes simple procedures and tests for ensuring accurate identification of rocks and minerals.
Probably the most professional of our Rock and Mineral guides, likely to appeal especially to the more advanced. The minerals are listed according to chemical classification, the book includes an excellent discussion on mineral identification, exhibits high quality photos, and contains good data on crystal description, chemical testing, and detailed mineral locales.
Our chief complaint is its organization. The mineral photos are separate from the narrative, requiring the reader to go back and forth on the study of a single mineral.
