We offer five different devices for measuring the specific gravity of gems and minerals, each suitable for particular applications, as summarized further below.  Pay close attention to the Min. and Max. Weight ranges listed, then click on the pictures below, or the navigation buttons above for more detail.

Electronic Scale with SG Kit:

Price of SG Kit:
$83 (Your only cost if you already have a scale)
Price of Scale:

$179 to $1,495, depending on model
Min. Weight for SG:

.02 carats to 2 carats, depending on scale
Max. Weight:

32 to 200 grams, depending on scale

Features: The more sensitive scales are ideal for small gemstones. This is also the fastest and most user-friendly of all devices featured here. If you already have an Electronic Scale, or need a precision Electronic Scale anyway, this is probably the best way to go for specific gravity measurements.

Direct Reading Balance:

Price: $139
Min. Wt: .15 grams or .75 carats
Max. Weight: 30 grams

Features: Its high degree of sensitivity makes it a good tool for gemstone identification (except for the smallest of stones), but it's also a good choice for mineral ID. Its direct reading feature frees the user from having to make any calculations.

Presidium Gem Computer Gauge:

Price: $249

Features: A specialized digital gauge that measures the volume of a cut gemstone, and then combined with the weight of the stone, calculates Specific Gravity.

Beam Balance w/SG kit:

Price: $258

Min. Weight for SG: About 1.5 grams

Max Weight: 310 grams

Features: Best suited for heavier mineral specimens.

Mineral Hydrometer:

Price: $79 (Out of stock)

Min. Weight: 1 gram

Max. Weight: 20 grams

Features: Suited for field use and/or the mineral hobbyist - our most affordable unit. You must be adept at basic arithmetic and at working with numbers.
