Publisher's Synopsis: Identify well over 500 minerals quickly and easily. With brilliant full-color photographs of every mineral, plus a unique rapid-finder design, acclaimed geologist Walter Schumann has put together the perfect field and reference guide for making quick, accurate identifications. The complete introductory discussion of mineral forms and properties explains, in detail, the essential criteria for recognizing minerals. Then, you can turn with confidence to the massive, photo-filled section describing in a concise, easy-to-read format each mineral, including mineral name, streak color, specific gravity, fracture, luster, chemical formula, Mohs' hardness, aggregates, other distinguishing characteristics, occurrence and localities. You'll also discover in the back an extensive glossary of terminology.
This is one of our favorites. It describes an extraordinarily large number of minerals, including many that are found mainly in Europe, the author being German. This handbook exhibits high quality photos which are positioned immediately across from the narrative. There is also a good discussion on mineral identification. Unlike all of the other guides, this book's minerals are organized by Streak color as an intended aid for identification, versus chemical classification. We prefer the latter.
In terms of drawbacks, this guide lacks descriptions on Rocks, so for those of you seeking that, choose a different guide. The other drawback may be the brevity in mineral descriptions that you might expect in a guide that describes a large number of minerals.
