One must recognize that besides its identity, the quality of the gem also has a great bearing on its purchase. For the examination of internal flaws, or looking for evidence of diffusion treatment or other "defects," examination of the gem immersed in a high refractive index liquid is the best approach. Dr. Hanneman developed the Mini-Cube II, a Portable Immersion Cell, for just such a purpose.
In it, odors are contained and loupe examination is simple. Methylene iodide is recommended for Garnets and the Corundum gems. Baby oil will work for Quartz and Beryl. (Fluids are not included.)
The unit itself is constructed from a standard scintillation vial fitted with a solvent tight cap. The vial slips in and out of the plastic cube which has a frosted surface adjacent to the vial and a recessed hole to fit a MAGlite® of one inch diameter. The black adapter allows the use of smaller lights.
