If you are looking for the most economically priced Gem Refractometer in a very portable configuration, then you may wish to consider this one.  It is made in China, and offers basic function at an affordable price, only $219.

Like the Gem-A model, it ranges in Refractive Index from about 1.30 to 1.81.  The price of this configuration also includes a bottle of Refractive Index Fluid with an index of 1.81.

The instrument includes a polarizer lens for Birefringence measurement, and the body of the instrument incorporates a yellow monochromatic filter, so a special light is not needed.

This model incorporates an integrated, battery operated light, with switch, shown in the picture, along with a back-up battery-operated pen light sized to fit in a custom sized portal in the rear of the instrument.

This instrument is compact (5" deep x 1.2" wide x 2.6" tall), and it comes in a molded plastic protective case (see photo) for ultimate portability.  Instructions in English are included.

We have run this unit through its paces on a couple of dozen stones, and it seems to function as it should.  In our opinion, this model represents good value for the money.
